Tune By Ear

This is a busy diagram, but don't be afraid. It's really not that difficult.

  1. Put your finger on the fifth fret of the sixth string. (the top, or biggest string)
  2. Pluck the sixth string and the fifth string. Adjust the fifth string to sound the same as the sixth string.
  3. Repeat this for all strings except the third string. Put you finger on the fourth fret and tune the second string.

To get a starting point, you can tune off of a piano, or a tuning harp, or a tuning fork. We call our tuning A 440. This means that the A string should vibrate 440 times per second. This was decided a long time ago by a bunch of guys who wore wigs and played for kings and queens.
